Govt. to uplift living standards in face of COVID-19 crisis - Lanza

State Minister for Rural Roads and Other Infrastructure Nimal Lanza said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the Government to take the necessary measures to uplift the living standards while protecting t he lives of the people in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

He said the country's development activities and economic progress will be given priority.

This was revealed at s discussion held at the Wattala Divisional Secretariat held under the patronage of State Minister Lansa and State Minister of Rural Industrial Promotion Prasanna Ranaweera to uplift the lives of the people in the Gampaha District by controlling the COVID-19 situation by providing Rs. 5,000 allowance to eligible families facing financial problems due to the quarantine curfew.

The distribution of essential food worth Rs.10,000 also took place.

The State Minister said that steps have been taken to streamline the mechanism for providing the necessary facilities to the people by implementing the decisions taken at the recent discussion chaired by the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for Economic Revival and Poverty Eradication Basil Rajapaksa, on maintaining the lives of the people in the face of the COVID-19 situation.

Accordingly, on the instructions of Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, State Ministers and Members of Parliament have taken steps to maintain this mechanism in a well-coordinated manner in every electorate in the Gampaha District.

"No country in the world has halted its economic activities due to the COVID-19 epidemic. We must continue with the development activities in the face of this crisis in order to achieve economic progress. Otherwise, our country will collapse in every field and face economic collapse," State Minister Nimal Lansa said. He said the country's development programmes will continue following the health guidelines to contain the COVID-19 crisis.

Former Western Provincial Councillor Randir Rodrigo, Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Thyagiratne Alwis, Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha Deputy Chairman Jagath Jayatunga, Wattala Divisional Secretary and Government officials were present on the occasion.
