Govt. to set up 1,000 export crop villages

The government is to set up about 1,000 villages for export crop production next year; trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena has obtained Cabinet approval for the programme.

The Export Development Board (EDB) would invest funds for this programme in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, and industrial services. The objective of this programme is to promote the local production process while utilising the country’s human and natural resources to increase job opportunities for unemployed youth, while also increasing the country’s foreign exchange.

About 750,000 direct and indirect job opportunities would be created for our youth in this country, Highways Minister Johnston Fernando told the Daily News yesterday.
