Street vendor attempts self-immolation over eviction orders

A tense situation arose yesterday when a street vendor attempted self-immolation in protest over the Anuradhapura authorities’ decision to evict street vendors alleged to have been engaged in unauthorised trading. Traders were seen along the pavement leading to the Teaching Hospital on the Anuradhapura Airport Main Road.

Police said they had received complaints from pedestrians regarding the issue. The street vendors had protested against the police when they arrived at the scene to remove them from the area. Several of them urged the authorities for an alternate decision.

“I have a family with children; this is what I do for a living. If I can’t sell my goods here, where am I to go?” the trader who attempted self-immolation asked. The traders had however vacated the area soon after the police warned them.
