Kothmale Reservoir dam to be elevated by 30 m

Height of the Kothmale Reservoir dam will be increased by 30 metres of the reservoir to contain more water. Thereafter, more arable lands in Anuradhaura and Puttalam in the Mahaweli H Zone will be irrigated developing cultivating paddy and other agricultural crops, Mahaweli Zone Canals and Settlement Infrastructure Development State Minister Siripala Gamlath said.

Minister Gamlath participated in an inspection tour of the Kothmale reservoir on November 3.

“More water will be issued via the Penstock at the Polgolla Reservoir to the Bowatenna Reservoir increasing the capacity of Kalawewa, Rajanganawewa, Dambulu Oya and Kandalama,” the State Minister said.

The Kothmale reservoir project was set up under the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Scheme in 1979. Its dam was built across the Kothmale Oya in Kadadora and constructed the reservoir at a cost of Rs.9,000 million and its operation commenced in 1985.

Under the new project, the water capacity of the Kothmale Reservoir will increase to 391 million cubic metres from the present 174 million cubic metres, Reservoir Engineer R.M.S. Wathsala said.

The Kothmale hydropower turbines generate 210 MW, and it will increase to 240 MW when the height of the dam is elevated by 30 metres, Engineer Wathsala said. The length of the dam is 600 metres and height is 87 metres.

Ministry Secretary W.B. Palugaswewa, Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority Director General Engineer Sunil S. Perera and Mahaweli E Zone Residential Enterprise Manager Gamini Gunawardana participated.
