Naval operations net 40 persons with illegally harvested sea cucumber

Naval search operations conducted in the past couple of days by the North Central and Northwestern Commands led to the arrest of 40 persons with 2,186 illegally harvested sea cucumbers.

During search operations conducted by the North Central Naval Command at Lokkannawadi beach in Walaipadu, in the Nachchikuda area and Konthampiddi in Mannar from October 31 to November 3, about 1,544 illegally harvested sea cucumbers were found in five fishing vessels.

Further, the Navy was able to arrest 21 persons and seize five fishing vessels, diving gear and several other fishing accessories during this operation.

In another operation conducted in the Thewampiddi area of Thunukkai on November 1, the same Naval Command jointly with the Illuppukadawai Police nabbed a person with 63 boiled sea cucumbers harvested illegally. Search operations also conducted by the Northwestern Naval Command in the Arippu-East beach area and along the seaboard extending from Kondachchikuda to Arippu on November 4, 5 resulted in the arrest of 19 people who were illegally harvesting sea cucumber.
