The Secretary to the Ministry of Finance has given approval to grant a grace period for the payment of traffic fines to the public who are inconvenienced by the inability to pay traffic fines in the face of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Department of Post, Postmaster General Ranjith Ariyaratne issuing a press release yesterday said that this measure was taken following the recommendations made by the IGP and Department of Post to provide relief to the public who were inconvenienced by this prevailing situation in the country.

Due to the current COVID-19 epidemic, people have been unable to pay for the fines issued by the traffic police in areas that are isolated on health recommendations and in the areas where the quarantine curfew is in effect as well as in areas where post offices closed due to various practical conditions.

Accordingly, the number of days from the date of suspension of office activities due to the second wave of COVID-19 to the date of lifting the quarantine curfew will be waived and the number of days from the date of offense will be calculated and additional time will be given to pay the fines.
