SP COVID-19 tally rises to 168

Since the upsurge of the second wave of COVID-19 until last Sunday, the total number of virus infected parsons in Southern Province (SP) has risen to 168, all of whom are detected from people who are being quarantined, Provincial Health Services Director Consultant Chandima Sirithunga said.

Accordingly, 111 cases were reported from the Galle district while 35 COVID-19 cases were reported from Matara. Out of the above total 22 cases were reported from the Hambantota district.

Meanwhile, District Secretaries of Galle, Matara and Hambantota said that distribution of the relief ration packages worth Rs. 5000 each were distributed among 2,903 families that are being quarantined in the province as the initial step.

“Accordingly, 531 beneficiary families were given the relief ration package in Hambantota while 986 and 1,386 families received the relief package respectively in Matara and Galle under the first stage of providing relief package.

The selection of food items of the package is carried out by the respective Divisional Secretariats and if any family has additional needs, such requirements will also be fulfilled. Under the first stage, each quarantined family will be given food supplies worth Rs.5,000 sufficient for 14 days.

The remaining families that are being quarantined will be issued with the relief package under the second phase of distribution. The total number of families being quarantined in the Southern Province is 5,182,” Provincial COVID-19 Coordinating Office sources disclosed.
