Mahakirindegama Tank to be renovated

Under ‘Irrigation Prosperity’ national programme

Sri Lanka Podujana Engineers’ Front will renovate the Mahakirindegama Tank in Anuradhapura as their maiden project under the Government’s ‘Irrigation Prosperity’ tank renovation national programme.

Renovation activities will begin on November 17 parallel with the first anniversary of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s election to the office, Project Leader Engineer Sujith Jayasuriya said.

Under this project, the renovations will be carried out covering each step from the catchment area to the cultivation lands. Required funds for the project will be borne by the Engineers’ Union itself, he said.

The Ministry of Irrigation set up the ‘Irrigation Prosperity’ national programme on the sidelines of ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ National Policy Framework of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“Five thousand irrigation tanks throughout the country are expected to be rehabilitated under this national programme enabling the settlers of these areas to engage in their livelihoods with enough water supply. Expertise to the tank renovations will be given solely by the local Irrigation Engineers utilizing the old and modern irrigations technologies,” Engineer Jayasuriya further said.
