Kurunegala, Puttalam farmers commend SAPP

Nearly 2,000 farmers in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts commend the Government for the implementation of the Small scale Agribusiness Partnerships Programme (SAPP) which has helped to boost their economy affected by the COVID-19 spread.

The SAPP programme is a project implemented under the Ministry of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development jointly funded by the Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

Under this project, cow pea was cultivated in 353 acres in the Kurunegala district and in 370 acres in Puttalam district. Maize was cultivated in 260 acres in the Kurunegala district and in 260 acres in Puttalam district. The harvesting of these crops is in progress now.

“The COVID-19 spread has had a great impact on our cultivations. We never expected to get a bountiful harvest. But, after being provided with the required seeds and equipment free of charge. We were granted financial assistance to meet all our expenses. Not only that action has been taken even to purchase our harvest. This is the first time that we received such benefits,’ said some farmers in the Galgamuwa area.
