Northern development programmes to uplift people's livelihoods - Johnston

Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said that the Government's development programmes in the North are driven purely by development needs for the betterment of the Northerners and not political mileage.

The Minister said this in response to the MP C.V. Wigneswaran who queried from the Minister whether the Government conducts the Jaffna District Development Committee attempting to consolidate its power in the Northern region through the Committee.

Addressing the gathering at the Jaffna District Development Committee held in Jaffna recently, the Minister said the aim of conducting Development Committees in each district is to uplift the livelihoods of the people by improving infrastructure facilities and not for gaining political mileage.

The Minister also asked MP Wigneswaran not to act in a manner that impedes the development activities in the Northern region. Minister Fernando also asked the MP not to bring in politics to the Committee as this is not a Parliament.

Parliamentarian C.V. Wigneswaran queried from the Minister as to why the government does not conduct the Provincial Council election and is holding the Committees of this nature. He also said that sufficient powers should be vested with the Provincial Councils to serve the people without strengthening the powers of the Central Government.
