WHO to provide vaccine that gives protection against COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) has agreed to provide a vaccine that can protect against COVID-19, for 20 percent of the country’s population.

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has appointed a committee to look into the matter.

A special discussion was held yesterday (09) at the Ministry with the participation of Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and the State Minister of Pharmaceuticals, Supply and Regulation Prof Channa Jayasumana and the Country Representative of the WHO, Dr. Razia Pendse.

During the discussion, Dr Pendse informed the Minister that the WHO has agreed to vaccinate 20 percent of Sri Lanka’s population.

Accordingly, Minister Wanniarachchi appointed a special committee that took into the matters including the way of funding, determining the procedure of selecting individuals for the vaccine , managing the relevant physical resources, obtaining information and others. Health Ministry Secretary Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Additional Secretaries to the Ministry of Health and a number of officials participated in this occasion.
