Tharana de Silva to lead Sri Sumangala, Panadura

Fifth year player, coloursman, all rounder, right hand top order batsman and right arm leg spinner Maduwana Kankanamage Tharana Gandawa de Silva will be captaining Sri Sumangala College, Panadura in the forthcoming first eleven cricket season 2020/21 and his deputy will be Mihiranga Fernando and their Head Coach and Assistant Coaches will be Mr. Kelum and Deshan Fernando respectively.

Tharana’s first school is Sri Sumangala College and as he was keen on cricket from his smaller days he attended cricket practices in the year 2009 under Harsha Srinath and Mr. Duminda at the College Cricket Academy. He attended under 13 cricket practices and got selected to the team in 2011 as an all rounder and played for the team in 2012 and 13.

He was appointed as the under 13 division one captain and he got 250 runs with two fifties and the highest score being 90 runs against formidable Thomians of Mt. Lavinia. In the same year he represented Fingara Cricket Club and played in the Nelson Mendis Trophy and Fingara emerged Champions.

In his first year in the under 15 he passed the 300 run mark and in 2016 he captained the team and topped the 300 run mark with two half centuries and in both these years he played for the Prima Cup for Kalutara District and Provincial Teams and he captained the team in 2016.

In the year 2017 was his first year in the under 17 and playing in 8 matches he collected 300 runs with two fifties and in his second year he captained the team and scored 252 runs.

As an under 15 player in 2016/17 he played for first eleven team in 7 matches and passed the 300 run mark with two fifties and played in the Big Match and the Limited Over match against their arch rivals Moratu Vidyalaya.

In his second year he collected 451 runs with three fifties and played for the Big Match and the One Dayer. His third year in the first eleven team was in 2018/19 and he scored 535 runs with 105 runs against Holy Cross College, Kalutara and another four fifties. In that year too he played for the Big Match and the Limited Over Match.

Last season he scored 784 runs with a top score of 252 runs versus Revatha College, Balapitiya which was the highest score by a batsman in the last season and he became the second highest scorer for his Alma Mater in the History of Sumangalian Cricket and the previous top score of 253 runs was made by Nipuna Deshan. Last season he got another century and three fifties and Sumangalians were lucky enough to play their Big Match and the Limited Over prior to the outbreak of Corona.

He represented the Kalutara District Team and he was the Captain. He toured Japan with a Combined Team from Western Province and Nugegoda Cricket Club. He is well supported by the Master in Charge of Cricket Priyanaka Nandasena and the new Principal Lt.Col. Liyanagaskumbura.
