Cannabis worth Rs. 31 million seized, five suspects nabbed

The Navy seized over 106 kg of Kerala cannabis and apprehended five suspects.

The Northern Naval Command during a special search operation in the coastal area of Madagalthurei yesterday seized over 100kg of Kerala cannabis on a dinghy. The cannabis was stuffed in 10 packages in four gunny sacks. Naval operations are underway for the suspects.

Three suspects were nabbed In Puthukkudiyiruppu and Erukkulampiddi, Mannar on November 1 and 8 with 5.907kg of Kerala cannabis, which were ready to be sold. Two more suspects were held with 4.650g of heroin in two separate operations in Mannar and Thoddaveli as well.

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard along with Monaragala Excise Station arrested a suspect with 3.600g of cannabis in Kudaoya, Thanamalwila, during another operation. The value of the stock exceeds Rs. 31 million. These operations were carried out adhering to safety and health guidelines to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic.

The suspects are residents of Mannar, Erukkulampiddi, Tharapuram and Kudaoya in the age group of 19 to 56 years. The suspects and narcotics were handed over to the Mannar and Ilavalai Police and the Moneragala Excise Station.
