Minister asks public servants to wear local clothes

Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara made a request from public servants to wear batik or clothes of traditional handloom to work from January 1 next year.

He proposed this move as a step to promote batik and locally made handlooms. He said that attention has been given to promote local apparel among public and private sector workers.

He was speaking to the media on Monday in Anuradhapura.

“There is a great enthusiasm for local production now. If we need to promote local apparel, we should start wearing them. We have requested the Public Administration Ministry to encourage wearing batik and local clothes at public institutions. We can start this from January 1 and then we will request to allocate a day in every week to wear local clothes. We need the support of all to make the initiative a success,” he said.
