Electrical, electronic waste to Japan for recycling

The Environment Ministry, Department of Posts and the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) announced that the first batch of waste collected at post offices during the e-waste collection week will be exported to Japan today for recycling.

The Minister was addressing a press conference at the Ministry yesterday.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the collection and export of electrical and electronic waste for recycling will continue. The first container has three tonnes of waste, he said.

He said that the initiative was taken by INSEE Cement Company in Puttalam.

The Minister said that accumulating electric and electronic waste at houses causes huge environmental damage. “This could lead to many health problems because of heavy metal content in such waste,” he said.
