Centre to prevent environmental damage

The Environment Ministry has decided to establish a Joint Operations Centre to prevent environmental damages.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to take the initiative for this Joint Operations Centre with the support of all Ministry Secretaries.

In the study of reports of damage to the environment, it has come to light that some such incidents do not directly come under the purview of the Environment Ministry.

Minister Amaraweera said that the Environmental Protection Joint Operations Centre will be set up to take joint action when such incidents are reported.

The Minister directed the CEA to deploy more personnel in the areas where a higher number of incidents of environmental damage have been detected.

Many incidents of environmental damage are being reported from the Puttalam District.

Mangrove-related environmental damage has been reported due to the construction of prawn farms.

Most of the lands used for prawn farms are private.

The Minister said that deforestation of mangroves is illegal even on private lands.
