Bus fares revised to meet COVID restrictions

The Government has authorised a 1.2% increase in the bus fares in areas where the number of passengers in a bus has been restricted to the number of seats available. The minimum bus fare of Rs.12 will be increased to Rs.14. A set of health guidelines was issued yesterday with regard to the operation of public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In areas where buses can only accommodate passengers to half the number of seats available (sitting one seat apart from each other) the bus fare is allowed to be increased by 1.5 per cent.

This bus fare revision has been to ensure the safety of the passengers and to protect the public transport industry hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge said.
