More factories to be opened in next five years -Wimal

Fifteen factories are to be opened islandwide in the next five years. Accordingly, a new factory will be constructed with funds from the up coming budget giving priority to the manufacturing and agriculture sectors in the Dimbulagala and Welikanda in the Polonnaruwa district, said Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

These decisions were made at the Polonnaruwa District Local Production Industries Development Committee which was set up under the 'National Programme to Build the Rural Economy.'

The meeting was held at the District Secretariat Auditorium, Polonnaruwa District Secretariat on Tuesday under the partonage of Minister Weerawansa.

"The new factory which to be built in addition to the Laksha Uyana factory run by the Ministry of Industries in the Polonnaruwa district will provide relief to industrialists and provide job opportunities," Weerawansa said.

The Minister also discussed with the relevant authorities about the problems faced by people engaged in the gem industry in the Polonnaruwa district. He also instructed the relevant officers to take measures to establish a sub-office of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority in Polonnaruwa. This project will be inititaed under the supervision of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
