Three tons of e-waste exported to Japan

The Ministry of Environment, Department of Posts and the Central Environmental Authority have announced that the first batch of waste collected at post offices during the e-waste collection week, was scheduled to be exported to Japan yesterday (11) at the Katunayake Investment Promotion Zone, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said.

The Minister was addressing a media briefing held at the Ministry of Environment.

The Minister further stated that this step has been taken by INSEE, a leading cement company located in Puttalam.“Accordingly, the first three ton container of electric and electronic waste will be exported to Japan as the collection of this electric and electronic waste in the houses will cause huge environmental damage,” Minister Amaraweera also said. The Minister highlighted that many Non-Communicable Diseases, especially cancer, contain high levels of radioactive metals in the industrial effluents, which can lead to many health problems due to their heavy metal content."Therefore, the collection and export of electrical and electronic waste collected at homes and exported for recycling will continue," the Minister said.
