Rapid Antigen Test Kit imported by private company - Amaraweera

The Rapid Antigen Test Kit for the identification of COVID-19 infected persons has been imported by a private company. The allegations made by the Opposition that these activities were carried out with the connivance of the Government are baseless and untrue, said Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

The Minister said so while participating in a discussion held at INSEE Cement Company in the Katunayake Investment Promotion Zone yesterday morning (11). The Minister said, when asked by a journalist, that although the equipment was imported by a private company, the feasibility and suitability of its use in hospitals would be decided by the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Health.

“However, the Opposition has repeatedly accused the Government of importing the equipment outside the accepted tender procedure and making false allegations against the Government,” the Minister said.

One of the journalists participating in the discussion said that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa had stated that he was ready to help the Government win the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Responding to this, the Minister said that the only support given by the Opposition was to criticize the actions of the Government.

“If the Government has made a wrong decision, it is good to criticize it. The Opposition should do that. However, the Opposition is only criticizing the Government at every turn without any basis,” he said.
