Stay indoors for Deepavali: Ministry issues strict guidelines

The Health Ministry yesterday issued guidelines on how to celebrate the Deepavali festival tomorrow due to the current pandemic.

The Health Ministry has also taken measures to educate the Hindu Priests and community leaders on these guidelines to ensure the safety and security of Hindu devotees.

The Ministry urged the public to stay indoors and follow strict rules of safety and also to have safe Diwali celebrations keeping in mind the physical distancing and hygiene amidst COVID-19 outbreak.

To preserve the good feelings the festival brings, the public must make sure that not a single Hindu devotee contracts the COVID-19 virus during this festival season.

The Ministry urges the Hindus in high risk areas such as Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara not to visit their relatives in villages in order to prevent from spreading the COVID 19 infection to their loved ones.

The Ministry further recommended celebrating the festival at home without taking trips. Hindu devotees have also been advised not to light open flames after using hand sanitizer which contains highly flammable alcohol.

Devotees are further advised to greet their loved ones through telephone calls and avoid contact by not making gestures such as shaking hands or hugging.

Further, parties involving alcohol and cigarettes should not be held.
