Wekandawala residents seek drinking water

Residents of the Wekandawala farmer colony in Weeraketiya are undergoing an acute shortage of drinking water since the Wekandawala Rural Water Project does not operate properly as the canal that supplies water to the project has dried up, Project Chairman Chandrasiri Palliyaguru said.

The residents now have to travel a long distance for water. The last government started excavating a large well spending Rs.11.5 million but it came to a standstill during the last election, the residents said.

Weeraketiya Divisional Irrigation Engineer S.M.Warnasinghe said that the water supply to this canal was curtailed as the water level of the Muruthawela Reservoir has decreased.

The supply of water will be resumed soon, he said.
