Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project Phase II to commence next January

The construction work of Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project Phase II (ANWSP PII); which is planned to provide safe drinking water to people in the Padaviya, Horowpothana, Kahatagasdigiya, and Kebithigollawa Divisional Secretariat Divisions and part of Rambewa in the Anuradhapura District; will commence in January, next year.

In these areas, most of the people depend on unsafe ground water, which could lead to Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Dental Fluorosis, and Skeletal Fluorosis. After the implementation of the ANWSP Phase II, 127 Grama Niladhari Divisions in Padaviya, Kebithigollawa, Horowpothana, Kahatagasdigiliya, and Rambewa will be covered. Altogether, a population of 193,320 will benefit from the project, which spans 2,067 km.

Project Director Sudath Rathnayake said that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) are the funding agencies of the project. The foreign cost component of the project, ¥19,409 million, has been granted by JICA, while the GOSL covers the local component of Rs.4.73 billion. The ANWSP-PII started on May 1, 2018, and it is planned to complete this project by November 30, 2024, he added.
