Johnston calls for renovation of Yakkure – Manampitiya Road

Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando instructed officials of the Polonnaruwa District Rural Infrastructure Development Committee meeting to rehabilitate the dilapidated Yakkure – Manampitiya Road, which has been neglected for a long time due to various issues between government agencies during and after the war.

The road was built under the Accelerated Mahaweli Campaign and was closed for the past 20 years due to the war. Since the Road is being located in between a wildlife zone, the minister said it is necessary to redevelop it without damaging any trees in the conservation after studying environmental assessments and obtaining approval from the Forest Conservation Department.

He added that roads closed during the war are now opened to the public—even the roads opposite the President House. Therefore, the minister urged the State officials to extend their support to bring forward the development activities while adhering to the country’s laws.

“We should not hesitate to take the timely decisions if they are essential for the development of the country,” he said.
