Over 11,000 COVID-19 patients recover

The number of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country surpassed the 11,000 mark yesterday.

According to the statistics of the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, the total recoveries from the infection reached 11,031 with active cases standing at 4,644.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases detected from the country reached 15,723 by yesterday morning.

The National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 (NCOPCO) yesterday stated that the total number of COVID-19 positive cases reported from Minuwangoda garment factory employees and Peliyagoda Fish Market stands at 12,226 and around 3106 of them are from the Minuwangoda cluster and all other 9,120 were from Peliyagoda Fish Market cluster.

By yesterday morning (13), about 30,000 persons of first and second contacts of COVID-19 positive cases were in self-quarantine.

As of yesterday morning (13), 2,845 persons in 30 tri service-managed QCs are still in quarantine. Within Thursday (12), 10,111 PCR tests were carried out across the country and the total PCR tests conducted so far stands at 637,122.

Meanwhile, another five COVID-19 deaths were reported yesterday, raising the overall death toll to 53, states Director General of the Government Information Nalaka Kaluwewa in a special media release.

As it was confirmed by Director General of Health Services Asela Gunaratne, these deaths were reported from Colombo 13, Colombo 14, Ratmalana and Chilaw.

Accordingly, a 83-year-old female from Colombo 14 died at home and a PCR test confirmed she was a COVID-19 positive patient. She had been suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes.

The second death reported yesterday was that of a 68-year-old man from Chilaw who had died on admission to the Mulleriyawa Base Hospital. Earlier, he was admitted to the Chilaw District Hospital upon being detected as a COVID-19 positive case and later transferred to the Mulleriyawa Base Hospital. The cause of death has been determined as complications due to COVID-19 infection, high blood pressure and brain haemorrhage.

The third victim was a 69-year-old man from Ratmalana who also died of the COVID 19 infection. He passed away as he was being rushed to the hospital after complaining of chest pain. High blood pressure, diabetes and COVID-19 infection resulted in the victim suffering a heart attack resulting in death.

“The fourth victim was a 78-year-old male from Colombo 13 who died at home. He had died of COVID-19 infection and A heart attack,” the Government Information Department release said.

The fifth victim was a 64-year-old asthma patient from Colombo 13 who died at home after contracting COVID-19.
