Swimming star Maheshika brings honour and fame to Mahamaya

Maheshika Hashini Hewage of Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy is an outstanding Swimmer and is the Captain of the Champion Swimming team of the School which won the All Island Swimming Championship for the 20th consecutive year in the year 2018.

Maheshika started her swimming career at the age of six years under Veteran Coach U.H.Sugath and the former Principal of the School Indra Vithanachchi was also behind her success.

From 2007 to 2014 she won all age group Swimming Meets at the all island swimming Championships in 60 & 100 Metres Butterfly events. From 2014 onwards she really showed her class when she won the under 14,

Under 16(in 2016) and Under 18(in 2018) and also the Central Province Swimming Meet winning 60 and 100 Metres, all in Butterfly events and the 200 metre Medley Relay.

In addition she took a further step by participating at the two Mile Sea swim held at Mt.Lavinia in the Under 15 age group to secure third place and she did not stop at that Meet but competed at the eighth Age group championship held in Bangkok, Thailand.

She also participated in the 50 & 100 Metre Butterfly events and 4 x 100 Medley Relay events.

Maheshi received Sri Lanka School colours in the years 2016 & 2017 and Central Province colours in 2015 to 2018.

She represented the Country at the 5th Asian Schools Swimming championship held in Sumatra, Indonesia in 2016 , unsuccessfully but secured the third place at the South Asian Aquatic Championship held in Colombo,.

Maheshika won the All Island Schools and National Games in the 50 and 100 metre Butterfly events and 4x100 medley Relay from 2014 to 2018.

She has got through her O levels obtaining ‘A’ passes in all subjects and sat for the Advanced level in Mathemetics and is awaiting results.

Maheshika, while being grateful to her Coach, U.H.Sugath, says that her teacher-in-charge,Priyanga Herath and the former teachers-in-charge, C. Ruwanpathirana and D.Siripala were really helpful in her success. Her main ambition is to be a Pilot.
