Sports school for Puttalam in four years - Namal

A sports school is to be established in the Puttalam District within four years to help students take part in national and international sports events, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa said.

He made these observations at the Puttalam Divisional Secretariat Auditorium, during a meeting on the programmes in the district coming under the Rural Economic Development National Programme, which is implemented through the Prime Minister’s Office with the approval of the Presidential Task Force.

The minister said a sum of Rs. 23 million has been allocated for the purpose. He added that the students would be admitted to the school through a special programme aimed at identifying their talents.

Officials were informed about the projects that are to be implemented next year in the district under the Social Infrastructure Facilities Committee chaired by the minister.

Minister Rajapaksa said that measures are being taken to recruit 300 teachers to teach English at schools in the district. He added that according to statistics (as there is an excess of teachers in Kurunegala, while Puttalam is short of them), the issue could be solved by altering the regulations related to the teachers in the Northwestern Province.

State Minister of Rural and Divisional Drinking Water Supply Projects Development Sanath Nishantha pointed out that the teacher shortage could be solved by providing training courses to recently-recruited graduates at Divisional Secretariats in the district who have not yet been assigned duties.
