‘Prison may spread virus outside’

Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage said that COVID-19 will spread in the Kandy District since Bogambara Prison staff frequently visit outside places disregarding that 124 prison inmates of the old Bogambara Prison have tested positive for the virus.

He said that several detainees had recently climbed to the prison roof and protested. Two hundred detainees have been referred to the Negombo, Mahara and Kegalle Prisons thereafter, he said.

The Governor was addressing a Social Infrastructure Development Committee meeting at the Kandy District Secretariat on Saturday. He said that 100 inmates have been directed to PCR tests on November 13 and of them, 68 have tested positive for COVID19.

The Governor said that COVID-19 may spread in society via prison officials and action should be taken in this regard very soon.

He said that in consultation with the Kandy Municipal Council, four of their abandoned quarters were taken to accommodate prison officials and the old prison must be well protected as it is in the centre of the city.

Kandy Police Division In-charge SSP Sudath Masinghe said that the facilities of the prison were in a very poor condition. Initially, it was said that 100 inmates will be brought there, but 809 prisoners were detained at the prison thereafter.

He said that as this is a place where prisoners are sent to quarantine, they have to be taken to the proper prison after quarantine and those who have not been taken to the relevant prisons have caused a commotion.

He said that the number of staff at the prison is inadequate to handle a large number of inmates and the virus may enter the city if proper arrangements were not made to meet the needs of the prison officials.
