17 year old Schoolboy Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage of Ananda College Colombo was crowned as the National Chess Champion of 2020.

Ranindu Liyanage attended Asoka Primary School Kalagedihena in Gampaha District for his primary education. He started his chess career when he was in grade two under the guidance of Nimal Rathnasiri in 2009. Ranindu’s game developed under the guidance of first Chess coach Nimal Rathnasiri.

Ranindu Liyanage was able to be ranked in 6th place and he was the member of the Sri Lanka under 7 team which won the Gold Medal’ in the Asian School Chess Championship held in Sri Lanka In 2010. Ranindu's medal changed his Chess journey. He joined Ananda College Colombo in grade 3 class in 2010. He continued his education at Ananda College.

Ranindu trained under Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, a well known Women Chess player and coach in primary level at Ananda College. . Nimal Rathnasiri, . Liyanapathirana, . Tharindu Chandrasiri and . Nethupul Athukorala helped Ranindu develop his skills in chess till grade 6. Ranindu trained under Prasanna Kurukulasuriya at upper level in Ananda College. Ranindu trained under International Master Romesh Weerawardane, well known Chess player, first Sri Lankan who won the International Master title and coach from 2013.

IM Romesh Weerawardane gave great support to develop Ranindu’s chess career. Ranindu was able to increase his International rating up to 2199 as his peak rating. Ranindu represented Sri Lanka many times in Asian and World Chess Championships and has visited 11 countries Greece, Philippines, Thailand, Romania, China, Singapore,Turkey, Russia, Vietnam, Iran and india”.

Ranindu Liyanage led under 10 (2012), under 11 (2013), under 13 (2015), under 15 (2017), under 17 (2018 and 2019) Ananda College Chess teams in the inter schools tournaments.

He emerged champion under 10 in the National Youth Rapid Chess championship 2013, under 14 champion in the National Youth Blitz Chess championship 2016. Under 14 champion in the National Youth Rapid Chess championship in 2016, under 15 champion in the National Schools Chess championship in 2018, under 16 champion in the National Youth Chess championship 2018.

National Achievements: Ranindu emerged Champion of the Junior National Chess Championship in 2018 and National Blitz Chess Chess Championship in 2020. He won the 1st runners up of the National Rapid Chess Championship in 2020. He emerged National Chess champion in 2020. This title has been won by an Anandian after 20 years which Luxman Wijesuriya won in the year 2000.

International Achievements: Ranindu represented the under 14 National team that won the bronze medal at Asian Nations Cup held at China in 2016. He won the bronze medal in under 14 age category of the West Asian Youth Chess Championship held in Sri Lanka in 2017 and was awarded Candidate Master title from World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Ranindu represented the under 16 National team for the World Youth Olympiad Chess Championship at Turkey in 2018 and also participated for the World Junior (under 20 ) Chess Championship at Turkey in the same year.
