SLTDA to provide allowance for tourism sector drivers, guides

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has instructed the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) to provide the Rs.15,000 allowance provided by the Government to drivers in the tourism sector within a week, in order to assist those who have lost their livelihoods due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cabinet approval was granted to pay a one-time allowance of Rs.15,000 and Rs.20,000 each to registered drivers and guides of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority who have been affected due to loss of income.

The Minister also emphasized that the Director General of the SLTDA expedited the registration of drivers who were not previously registered or who have applied and were waiting for formal approvals. Director General of the Tourism Development Authority Dhammika Wijesinghe stated that out of the 4,313 applications received by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, 3,085 qualified drivers will be given an allowance of Rs.15,000 this week.

Among them are 1,823 full-time tourist drivers, 45 tourist bus drivers and driving assistants, 658 trishaw drivers and 559 safari drivers. The DG also added that 359 untrained drivers of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority have also applied for the posts and have been referred for registration. “In addition, payments have been made to 1,998 tour guides who had applied for an allowance of Rs.20,000,” the Director General said.
