Mangrove cultivation project gets impetus

A programme to replant mangrove saplings in coastal and lagoon areas is being implemented on the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Minister of Urban Development and Housing.

This programme has been initiated in order to protect the mangrove environment.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed the Marine Environment Protection Authority to take all possible measures to further develop the existing mangrove environment in the country, which currently covers 15,669 hectares.

“The project which envisages the planting of mangroves in several lagoon areas will be launched to coincide with the first anniversary of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s tenure in office,” said Marine Environment Protection Authority Chairperson Attorney-at-Law Dharshani Lahandapura. The project is being implemented by the Marine Environmental Protection Authority under the supervision of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Public Sanitation State Minister Dr. Nalaka Godahewa and Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing Sirinimal Perera.
