Sports Ministry to revamp Matale Stadium, other facilities

The Bernard Aluvihare Stadium in Matale is set to receive a major overhaul following an inspection of the site by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa on Sunday.

The Minister observed many shortcomings during his visit to the stadium and lamented with the limited facilities, which are been neglected due to improper planning and poor management.

“It is very sad to see the current state of the Matale Sports Complex. This project, which was started in 2014 has been neglected and wasted,” the Sports Minister stressed.

“We must not build-up infrastructure without a proper plan. I have informed the relevant authorities to take needy action immediately and restore the Matale Sports Complex for the use of athletes,” he added.

Meanwhile, the authorities also pointed out the pathetic situation of the swimming pool located close to the stadium, which is now malfunctioning due to negligence.

Therefore, the Minister of Sports responded swiftly and urged the relevant authorities to restore the swimming pool and other requirements to the best of conditions within a period of two weeks.

The Minister of Sports also paid a visit to the popular Nandimithra Hockey Grounds and observed several shortcomings, which have been in existence for nearly eight years. Later, the Minister revealed that he would upgrade the Nandimithra Hockey Grounds to an international stadium at a cost of Rs. 50 million. In addition, the Sports Minister said that he would take necessary steps to renovate the Matale, Edward Park for provincial hockey matches and training.
