Prisoner dies in failed escape attempt

One inmate died and three others were re-captured after an escape attempt by five inmates from the temporary quarantine centre set up at the old Bogambara Prison premises in the early hours of Wednesday (18).

However, a fifth suspect had fled the scene.

The deceased is said to have succumbed to serious injuries after falling from the 30-foot high wall of the prison. He had been admitted to the Kandy Hospital.

“The 30-year-old deceased prisoner who was a resident of the Katukeliyawa area in Anuradhapura had been imprisoned for a murder case and drug smuggling,” Police said. “Of the three inmates, a 24-year-old inmate has been admitted to the Kandy Hospital with injuries and is currently being treated in a COVID-19 suspected ward,” Acting Director of the Hospital Iresha Fernando said.

According to her, the cause of the death of the inmate who succumbed to injuries will be defined following the autopsy. “His external injuries cannot be seen as gunshots,” she further said.

“Police with the support of the Special Task Force launched a search operation to locate the fifth inmate yesterday and he was subsequently arrested in Kandy city,” Police said.

A PCR test was to be conducted on the remains of the deceased inmate yesterday.

Meanwhile, one of the inmates who tried to escape launched a protest on the top of a tree in the prison premises last morning.

Investigations into the incident are being conducted under the supervision of the Superintendents of the Kegalle and Pallekele Prisons in addition to the investigations being conducted by the Kandy Police.
