Committee to inquire into prison incidents

Prisons Reforms and Prisons Rehabilitation State Minister Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle yesterday ordered State Ministry Secretary Geethamani Karunaratne to conduct an impartial inquiry into a number of incidents that took place at prisons during the last few months through a committee led by an Additional Secretary.

She said that the committee should comprise less than three members. The committee will be tasked to investigate the death of an inmate at the Moneragala Remand Prison, assault on an inmate at the Matara Prison, incidents involving the escape of inmates from the Bogambara Prison and the death of a escapee. The Minister has also sought a comprehensive report from the committee in three weeks.

The State Minister has said that an impartial inquiry has to be conducted into these incidents and action should be taken against those responsible as the prisons have adopted Mandela rules for treating prisoners.
