Jaffna HC rejects petitions over ‘Mahaviru’ commemorations

The Jaffna High Court yesterday rejected four petitions filed against the Police action of obtaining restraining orders to prevent LTTE ‘Mahaviru’ commemorations scheduled for next week, acting Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Accordingly, Police can take actions against the persons who organized ‘Mahaviru’ commemorations in the Northern Province,” DIG Ajith Rohana added.

DIG Rohana observed the petitioners called for a writ order from the Court to stop the Police actions.

The Police Spokesman said that the petitioners informed the Court that the commemoration ceremonies are to be held in the Northern Province from November 25-27 and requested the Court to issue an order preventing authorities from stopping those ceremonies.

The DIG further stated that Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena, Deputy Solicitor General Haripriya Jayasundara, Senior State Counsel Shahida Baari appeared on behalf of the Attorney General. “The Counsels appearing on behalf of the Attorney General argued that the court has no jurisdiction to issue such an order in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. The Court accepted the argument made by the State and the provisions of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution were discussed,” DIG Ajith Rohana further added.
