Navy personnel seized a trawler that was transporting ICE (Crystal methamphetamine) and heroin off the Galle coast yesterday, the Navy said.

The trawler was sailing off the coast between Galle and Hikkaduwa. Naval personnel on a vessel from the Southern Naval Command had inspected the trawler and took it into custody at the fishing anchorage of Jakotu Welle, Galle. Five suspects were aboard. Four were arrested while one escaped, the Navy said. The trawler has been towed to the Dhakshina Naval Camp.

The Navy personnel detected 5,900 grams of ICE and 2,100 grams of heroin.

Navy Spokesperson Captain Indika Silva said that the trawler is registered to an address in Chilaw.
