Contracts signed to build 3,000 housing units for low-income families

Several local construction companies signed agreements to construct 3,000 housing units for low income families in a ceremony at the Urban Development Authority (UDA) on Monday under the patronage of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness State Minister Dr Nalaka Godahewa.

Those will be constructed in Orugodawatta, Blumendhal, Makumbura and Boralesgamuwa under the first phase of the Government Programme of Building 5,000 Housing Units for the middle income families .

Some of the housing units will be constructed in Getabe in the Kandy District and Peliyagoda in the Gampaha Dstrict. The Governemnt will spend Rs. 40 billion on the project.

The UDA has identified the location in the Colombo and Gampaha Districts to build the housing units.

Public sector employees will be provided with these housing units closer to their work places and each unit has floor area of 700 x 900 square feet.

A 700 square feet housing units consists of two bedrooms and a 900 square feet unit has three bedrooms.

The value of the land will not be included in the selling price.

The Government has granted tax concession for building materials and bank loan will also be provided to the middle income families to buy housing units with an interest rate of 6.25 per cent per annum. The loan is repayable in 25 years. The Government will also provide infrastructure facilities for the housing schemes.

The mega housing programme is implemented under the President’s vision ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour,’ on the directive of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Urban Development and Housing Minister.
