One of five COVID escapees from treatment centre arrested

Security Forces have launched an extensive operation to search for four COVID-19 positive inmates who escaped while at the Gallella treatment centre in Polonnaruwa from the Negombo Prison.

The inmates aged 26, 27, 31, 36 and 52 had escaped yesterday morning. Police say all five of them are narcotic abusers and their identities have been revealed.

Police Media spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said that one of the inmates was found and arrested in Madampe, while he was in hiding. He said Madampe police are investigating to ascertain how he had managed to come to the area and who he may have been in contact with.

The inmate arrested in Madampe is Kavindu Madushan (27). He was later taken to a treatment centre.

The other inmates are said to be residents of Wennapuwa, Marawila, Waikkal and Boralessa. Police say a special investigation headed by a Senior Superintendent of Police is underway to locate the four other individuals. Those who have any information relating to these individuals are requested to call the Inspector of Police of the Polonnaruwa Police Headquarters or the 119 emergency hotline.
