Under a novel concept HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL), one of the oldest social service organizations in the country that helps less- privileged senior citizens, conducted a X’ mas tree lighting ceremony at HelpAge Head office premises, Rattanapitiya, Boralasgamuwa with the participation of elders.

Elders were happy to attend this ceremony because they had witnessed such an event for the first time.

The main objective of the ceremony was to provide an opportunity for elders to actively participate in a joyous occasion and help them enjoy the Season.

The elders who attended the ceremony were from H.P. Gooneratne HelpAge Elders’ Day Care Centre at Borupona Road, Ratmalana.

Some elders said they participated in a such pre- X’ mas tree lighting ceremony for the first time after several years and thanked HelpAge for invitng them to grace this occasion.

Making a brief speech HASL, Council Member Nishantha Gooneratne said HelpAge was established several decades ago not only to perform free cataract surgeries and provide medical assistance to the needy elders but also to bring a relief to their minds by conducting social events.

Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said presently the HelpAge Eye Hospital at Sinsapa Road Wellawatta (Opposite Savoy Cenema) provides completely free cataract surgeries every day for elderly citizens and invited needy elderly citizen over 55 years to get her/his cataract surgery done free of charge from HelpAge Eye Hospital.
