Mother accused of infanticide

The Jaffna Police have launched an investigation into an incident where a newborn infant had been buried soon after birth by the mother on December 31.

The 24-year-old woman had given birth to the baby boy and had buried the infant in the garden of her home in Ariyalai, Jaffna.

The woman had been taken to the Jaffna Hospital due to excessive bleeding and it had been revealed that she had given birth. The Jaffna Police had been notified and had rushed to the woman’s home, but although they had recovered the newborn child and rushed him to hospital, the child was already dead. However, it is unclear if the child had been buried alive or if the child was still born. Therefore, a postmortem examination is expected to be carried out to determine how the child had died. Jaffna Police is conducting further investigations.
