A COVID victim was cremated at the Kurunduwatta crematorium on Saturday evening at State expense since the relatives of the dead refused to receive the body.

It was cremated following health regulations under the supervision of the Poddala Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Medical Officers of Health (MOHs) and Public Health Inspectors (PHIs).

The deceased was identified as Mohamed Naleer Mohamed Faizar (75) - a resident of Polduwa Watta, Mahahapugala, Akmeemana. He had died at his residence and the body had been dispatched to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital where the body tested COVID positive.

Galle Municipal Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Dr. B.G.N.Karunatilake held the inquest. The victim’s son, Mohamed Faizal Mohamed Panni, gave evidence.

Consultant Judicial Medical Officer Ruwan Nanayakkara held the postmortem and returned a verdict that the death occurred due to COVID accelerated pneumonia.
