Fixed prices for 10 essentials from February - Minister

Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardene yesterday said a comprehensive mechanism is in place to provide 10 essential items to consumers at a fixed price from February.

He said quotations will be called from producers and direct importers for the purchase of ten essential items and relevant advertisement will published in the papers by end of this month.

The Minister was of the view that this measure will help provide high quality products to the consumer at a low cost.

Quotations are called from producers and direct importers for the purchase of ten essential items. They are rice, flour, sugar, dhal, canned, fish, sprats,onions,potato,eggs and chicken.

Speaking at a meeting on establishment of an economic centre in Mihintale, Gunawardene said essential items purchased at minimum prices will be made available to the public through Lanka Sathosa, Co-operatives and Q shops around the country.

He added that this mechanism aiming at stabilising the prices of essential commodities will be in effective from February to June this year.
