Education Minister G.L Peiris said that all schools will reopen for Grade 11 students on January 25, as the 2020 GCE Ordinary Level Examination (O/L) is due to be conducted in March.

He said only schools located in isolated areas in the Western Province and other areas would not be reopened until further notice.

He was speaking at a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) press conference held at the Water’s Edge in Colombo yesterday.

The dates of the GCE O/L examination have already been announced from (March 1 to March 11) and the results are to be released by end of June, he added.

He said all schools apart from schools in isolated areas in the Western Province and other areas would be reopened on January 11 for the first term for primary section and pre-schools will also reopen in the same manner.

The decision to reopen the schools was taken by the Ministry of Education after a lengthy discussion held with Medical Experts in this regard last Sunday. During the discussions, special attention was paid to the school interval time and student transport facilities and an information leaflet containing details and instructions to be followed by students, parents and teachers could be downloaded from the official website of the Ministry of Education from today, he added.

“All textbooks have already been provided to all schools and students also can download any textbook from the official website of the Ministry of Education,” he said.

He also said that the results of the GCE Advanced Level examination held last year are expected to be released by the end March.
