Yala Safari Vehicle Assn. raises objections

The Yala Safari Vehicle Association has raised objections regarding the action taken by a member of the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha for arranging for a group of Ukrainian tourists to visit the Yala National Park without informing anyone.

"The relevant Pradeshiya Sabha member has misled the jeep drivers who had joined the safari. As a result, 28 of our helpless jeep drivers have been placed under quarantine for 14 days," said the President of the Yala Independent Jeeps Association, P.D. Keerthi.

He was speaking at a press conference held at the Habiskus Hotel in Tissamaharama yesterday.

"Tourists from Ukraine have been brought to Sri Lanka in the past few days as a pilot project to revive the tourism industry that was facing difficulty due to the COVID-19 Corona virus pandemic. The tourists were scheduled to visit the Yala National Park from January 2," he added.

"The Government had earlier told us that the tourists arriving in the country would be divided according to the number of safari jeeps available. But in the end a member of the Pradeshiya Sabha in the area got involved and he came forward as the President of the Independent Jeeps Association and took over all these matters and gave permission to his colleagues and friends to transport these tourists," Keerthi also alleged.
