CEA to submit report on felling of trees at Rajapihilla Park

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday instructed the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to submit a comprehensive report on the felling of trees at the Rajapihilla Park in Kurunegala.

Amaraweera gave instructions to the Central Environmental Authority Chairman to submit an immediate report on the destruction of 28 large trees in the Rajapihilla Park in Kurunegala.

The Minister also inquired whether the Central Environmental Authority or its district office had given their approval for this. The Minister said that the relevant parties have stated that these trees have been cut down to carry out development activities and that environmentalists and environmental organisations are already inquiring about this matter.

The Minister briefed the officials of the Ministry this morning on the programmes to be implemented for the year 2021.

Accordingly, the Minister proposed a programme consisting of 10 major projects and instructed to take action to implement it.

Commenting on the felling of 28 trees in the Rajapihilla Park, the Minister said that the situation prevailing in the country due to COVID 19 has created an opportunity for unscrupulous elements in the society to engage in the destruction of the environment.

He added that the Ministry should deploy officials to investigate such incidents of poaching and to provide accurate information to the media in this regard, the Minister said.

Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Anil Jasinghe and a group of eminent officials were present on this occasion.
