Moratuwa sings with Christmas lights online

Moratuwa, the City of Music, gathered young and old to entertain music lovers during the time of a global pandemic. Even in misery, tears, and hunger with economic difficulties, these jovial souls are kept up the cheer during the Christmas season.

There were no bookings or orders for the musicians, but they were not discouraged. They did not point their fingers at destiny. They launched entertainment online to please music lovers in Sri Lanka and across the world.

A Christmas medley was done by over 25 Sri Lankan born musicians around the globe to bring a “Ray of Hope” to the world at large, suffering with restrictions and following the code “Be Safe.” The event was initiated by ‘Electric Dreams’ (Mary Sharmalee de Silva, John de Silva, Suresh de Silva and Reza Faiz) with the support of a group of singers in Moratuwa, members of the Moratuwa Arts Forum, and popular vocalists like Sunil Perera, Piyal Perera, Chandani Hettiarchchi,, Jacqualine, Sonali, Cherrie, and Kay Jay, under the guidance of the President Lucky Deva, Melantha Perera, and Suresh de Silva. The songs were uploaded on YouTube.

Moratuwites FB Page, - Organizer – Mithudam with the assistance of the duo - brothers Melantha and Rukshan, organized a Christmas Choir online at the Kadalana Methodist Church under the theme “Ray of Hope.”

Moratuwa Lalitha Kala Association has composed “Nattal Gee” and the members are singing the songs through YouTube.

The Moratuwites living in and across the island like Dr.Manela Joseph, Eranjan and Viranjan, (the only singing twins), Mariezelle Gunatilleke, Chandral Fernando, Nihal Fernando, Lankika Perera, Jagath and Shenya, Nichole Natasha, Anton Silva, and Sarath Gunawardana performed on YouTube singing carols.

The Cancer Society Moratuwa branch distributed Rs 3000 to 55 cancer patients under the leadership of President Farina Dole. They also distributed packs of dry rations, donated by the Expo 80 Tyronne Fernando Foundation.

An entertainment programme was organized by the Parishioners of Holy Emanuel Church, Moratuwa under the leadership of Lankika Perera and Nihal Fernando, singing of carols to the Covid 19 patients of the Lunawa Hospital, while abiding the rules of the Health Ministry.

The Young Womens’ Christian Association, comprehending and following all the Government Health rules, conducted an unofficial Santa’s arrival to distribute valuable gifts to the children of the nursery and the poor.
