Four arrested over abduction, murder of monk

Killed over personal dispute with novice

Four individuals including a female have been arrested over the abduction and murder of a monk at the Kodikanda Aranya Senasanaya in Thummodara, Hanwella.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said the charred body of the monk was recovered on Monday at the Nawana Cemetery in Kotadeniyawa. Four suspects including the parent of a novice monk at the monastery have been arrested over the incident.

DIG Rohana said the body of the monk was taken to the Negombo Base Hospital for an autopsy and the witnesses have identified the body was that of Ven.Uduwila Dharmasiri Thera who was abducted on January 2.

DIG Ajith Rohana said it is suspected that the monk may have been murdered over a personal dispute.

The Judicial Medical Officer of the Negombo Base Hospital conducted an autopsy to determine the cause of death, based on the orders issued by the Minuwangoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Accordingly, DIG Rohana said the suspects have been arrested during the course of the investigation launched by the Kotadeniyawa and Hanwella Police teams and a special investigation has been launched by the Western Province (South) Crimes Unit, under the direction of Western Province Senior DIG.

A van, which has been used to commit the crime, had also been recovered by the Mirihana police.

He also stated that the suspects were produced before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court yesterday and obtained 48 hours detention order to interrogate the suspects.
