Mawanella statue vandalised by drug addict - Police

Investigations have revealed that there is no extremism or terrorism linked to the Mawanella Buddhist Statue vandalism which occurred on December 28.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated police said that even though several media reports fueled the incident by spreading disinformation over the damage caused to the glass cover of the Buddhist Statue, it is a crime committed by a drug addict and there is no extremism or terrorism involved.

The glass cover surrounding the statue in the Hingula area in the Mawanella police division facing the Colombo - Kandy Road was damaged on December 28. DIG Ajith Rohana said acting on the orders of the SSP Kegalle, the Divisional Crime Detective Bureau(DCDB) also initiated investigations into the incident. Accordingly, the DCDB has arrested the suspect on Monday (4) and is a 30-year-old resident of Kegalle identified as Priyantha Sampath Kumara.Investigations are being carried out by the DCDB Kegalle and the suspect was handed over to the Mawanella police yesterday (5).

The suspect was produced to the Mawanella Magistrate’s Court yesterday (5). DIG Ajith Rohana also stated that the suspect was notorius for stealing money from places of worship and tills in the area.
