A project which was first initiated when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the then Secretary to the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development saw the completion of its first phase when a housing complex for Peliyagoda was launched yesterday in keeping with the country's National Policy Framework "Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour".

The housing complex model was developed following a a survey which identified that there are nearly 68,894 shanties in the city of Colombo. The target was to ensure that there were at least 18000 homes built by 2015, however the project stalled in the following year and could not be completed.

The town of Peliyagoda has been identified a demographically important site as it is a meeting point for all expressways. It is also where the new manning market and fish market is closed in close proximity. State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Public Sanitation Dr. Nalaka Godahewa who participated in this occasion stated that this housing project will also help to revive the economy.

"The dream of owning a home to some of these shanty dwellers is next to impossible due to various factors, as such we are making it easy and possible for them to own a house in the same vicinity. We have identified that there are nearly 3000 families here who need to be relocated to better houses and cabinet approval has been granted for the construction of these housing complexes," he said. "We will be launching a 600 houses project near China with Chinese aid. We urge those living here to cooperate with us so that we may offer them a better housing option."
