A prison guard who attempted to smuggle heroin, ice and other narcotic drugs into the Bogambara prison was arrested by prison authorities yesterday.
The prison guard had tried to smuggle the drugs hidden inside his belt, a part of his official uniform.
Commissioner of Prisons (Administration and Rehabilitation), Chandana Ekanayake, said that a team of prison officers had searched the guard near the main gate of the prison and found three grams of heroin, three grams of ice and a stock of Kerala cannabis in his possession.
Ekanayake said that the prison officials themselves were inspecting the officers to control the movement of drugs into the prisons and that the said officer had been caught with drugs during such an inspection. The prison guard who was arrested with the drugs has been handed over to the Pallekele Police and further investigations are being carried out by the police.
